Door design

The arch and the privacy grid were designed together.

The finished assembly is approximately 76 1/8 inches wide by 118 3/8 inches high, with an 8-inch jamb and two-inch-thick inswing doors. Twelve glass openings divide the arched pair into a consistent steel grid.

The right-hand leaf is active when viewed from outside. Smart access hardware, the center meeting stiles, and the final satin-brass trim were coordinated within a narrow hardware zone so the entry remained visually balanced.

Smart glass engineering

Every lite arrived with a busbar and six-foot lead.

The white PDLC privacy layer sits within a laminated, insulated glass build using low-iron tempered glass and a Guardian SNX 62/27 Low-E coating. Each unit includes a bottom busbar and six-foot wire lead routed toward the controller.

Two concealed power transfers carried wiring into the moving leaves without interrupting the narrow hardware zone. The drawing set therefore had to establish orientation, glazing access, connections, and the relationship between twelve powered units and two operable doors.

Installation and use

The finished frame waited for the wired glass crate.

The crated shipment photograph shows the individually packed glass units and bundled wire leads before glazing. Once all twelve units were seated, the door was installed in June 2022, followed by electrical connection and an operational check.

Interior photographs document both states from matching viewpoints in the same room: a transparent view through the entry and a diffuse privacy field at the switch. The unchanged steel grid makes the transformation in the glass unmistakable.

The homeowner described the completed door as stunning and said the family could not be more thrilled. The practical value is just as clear: daylight and an open view without committing the entry to permanent transparency.

Switchable glass changes the coordination sequence. The door fabricator, glass supplier, electrician, access-control hardware, and finished wall conditions need a shared plan before production.

How does switchable privacy glass work?

A powered privacy layer changes optical state. In one state the glass is transparent; in the other it becomes diffuse and obscures the direct view. The exact clear-state haze, color, wiring, controller, and fail-state behavior depend on the specified system.

Can smart glass be used in an exterior steel door?

Yes, when the complete insulated glass build, lamination, Low-E coating, edge construction, wire path, movement at the door leaf, weather seal, and electrical requirements are coordinated for exterior use.

Where do the wires go?

Each unit has a defined busbar orientation and wire lead. The frame and door construction need protected routes to a controller and power source, with enough access for installation, testing, and future service.

Can switchable glass work with smart entry hardware?

Yes. The keypad or access-control hardware and the glass control are separate systems, but both compete for space in the door and surrounding wall. Their power, wiring, hardware backsets, and service access should be coordinated together.
