What drives the price of custom steel?

Bigger glass does not mean proportionally more work. The smartest steel designs put the investment where you will see and feel it every day.

Think in whole openings. Scale changes both the architecture and the economics.

Start with a useful number.

Custom steel doors and windows are an architectural investment. You should be able to discuss a real budget early, before spending weeks choosing details. For planning, D’Hierro statement entrances typically run $10,000–$25,000, multi-room projects $20,000–$65,000, and residence projects $60,000–$250,000+.

Those ranges describe different scopes, not three versions of the same door. The final investment comes from the openings, glass, operation, finish, hardware and site conditions. A simple fixed window, a gridded pair of doors and an oversized pivot ask very different things of the shop and installation crew.

The useful question is where the money goes—and which decisions give you the strongest result for your home.

More glass can be a better use of the budget.

A steel opening has a substantial amount of work before its size becomes the main variable. We develop the design, prepare the frame, fit the joints, weld, grind, prime and finish it. Making the opening larger does not multiply every one of those operations at the same rate as its glass area.

A 36-by-72-inch opening has 18 square feet of area and 18 feet of perimeter. A 72-by-96-inch opening has 48 square feet and 28 feet of perimeter. That is 167% more area with only 56% more perimeter—and still four outer corners. A generous, uncomplicated opening puts more of your investment into the view.

This is an important reason to price the large opening you actually want. Custom steel can be more competitive than buyers expect when it is compared with another premium system at the same scale and specification.

The configuration matters as much as the square footage.

Two openings can cover the same wall area and have very different prices. One might be a large fixed picture window. The other might contain three operating casements, individual frames, seals, hinges and locking hardware. The second design asks us to build and fit more moving assemblies.

Grids make a similar difference. Picture glass keeps the fabrication simple. Simulated divided lites add slim lines across continuous glass. True divided lites add fitted steel divisions and separate glass units. Arches introduce shaping, radius work and shaped glass.

We like to start with the architecture, then decide where operation and detail add something you will use. Put opening windows where ventilation matters. Give the view room to breathe. Keep a beautiful arch when it defines the entrance. Spend deliberately.

  • Fixed or operating: moving panels add frames, hardware, seals and fitting.
  • Picture, SDL or TDL: every additional division changes the fabrication.
  • Straight or arched: shape changes the steelwork and the glass.
  • Single, pair or pivot: the operation changes the hardware and installation.

Choose the glass and hardware for the opening.

Glass and hardware are working parts of the design. Exterior glass needs to suit the exposure and comfort you want inside. A large moving leaf needs the right support, closing action, locking and pull. These choices shape both the price and the experience of using the door.

Very large glass can require different thicknesses, fabrication, transport or lifting arrangements. A wide pivot can need a different hardware class and a larger crew. That is why price per square foot is a useful comparison within similar designs, but a poor shortcut across entirely different assemblies.

Keep the specifications visible when comparing proposals. A lower total with different glass, lighter-duty hardware or a narrower scope is a different offer.

Compare what will actually arrive at your house.

A product price on a website is not necessarily the price of a finished entrance. Establish whether the proposal includes the complete frame, glass, hardware, finishing, delivery and installation. For a replacement, identify removal and the work around the opening as well.

D’Hierro fabricates custom steelwork in Dallas and installs with our own team. Surrounding drywall, trim, millwork and paint belong to the appropriate finish trades and should be coordinated in your project budget. Knowing the boundaries early makes the comparison clearer and the installation smoother.

Send us the competing configuration you are considering, along with the specifications that matter to you. We can price a comparable D’Hierro design and show where a different arrangement could make better use of the opening.

Design the value in from the beginning.

Our favorite savings come from a better design: a generous fixed center with operable panels only where needed; a finer SDL grid in place of many separate lites; a cleaner entrance that puts the emphasis on the arch, the glass and a beautiful handle.

Those choices can reduce fabrication while making the finished work feel more considered. Tell us what you want the room to do and where you want the budget to land. We can develop the opening around both.

You do not need final measurements to begin the conversation. Photos, rough dimensions and an inspiration image are enough for an initial scope discussion. We turn that starting point into a specific design and proposal.

Straight answers

Common questions.

How much do custom steel entry doors cost in Dallas?

D’Hierro statement entrance projects typically range from $10,000 to $25,000. Size, the surrounding glass, operation, hardware, finish and site conditions set the final price. Share a photo and rough opening size so we can relate that planning range to your project.

Are larger steel windows cheaper per square foot?

They can be. A simple opening spreads much of the frame preparation and fabrication across more glass area as it grows. Large-glass requirements and installation can change that relationship, so we compare actual designs. It is worth pricing a larger picture opening before assuming it is out of reach.

What is the best way to reduce cost without losing the look?

Start with the layout. Use fixed glass where you do not need ventilation, simplify unnecessary divisions, and consider SDL when you want a fine grid. Keep the details that make the architecture—the proportions, an important arch, the finish and hardware you will touch every day.

Why can two steel doors of the same size cost so differently?

The same outside dimensions can hide very different work: glass specifications, true or simulated divisions, pivot or hinge hardware, locking, finish and installation. Compare the complete specification and scope. Square footage alone does not tell you what you are buying.

Is custom steel always more expensive than aluminum or clad?

Get a comparable quote before ruling steel out. At larger sizes and with custom configurations, the gap can be much smaller than expected. Match the dimensions, operation, glass, hardware and installation, then weigh the price alongside the sightlines and design you actually want.

Can you work from rough measurements for an initial estimate?

Yes. Send photos, rough dimensions, your location and whether the work is replacement or new construction. We use that information to discuss scope and prepare the initial proposal. Final fabrication follows the project’s measurement and drawing process.
