How long does it take to design and manufacture custom steel doors?

Hi Everyone,

I get this question all the time—usually in a slightly stressed tone, right after someone says, “We’re trying to keep the project on schedule…”
So let me ask you something first: when you think about custom steel doors, are you worried they might slow everything down?

Here’s the honest answer, based on 30 years of doing this every single week.

Most custom steel doors take about 8–10 weeks once the design and dimensions are finalized. Not months. Not forever. And definitely not the horror stories you may have heard.

The longest timelines we’ve seen—closer to 15 weeks—usually had nothing to do with steel fabrication itself. They came from design changes, delayed approvals, or decisions being made late in the construction process.

One project that always comes to mind was a beautiful custom home where everything lined up perfectly. The builder brought us in early, the homeowner knew the look they wanted, and drawings were reviewed and approved quickly. From final approval to production, everything stayed on track. The doors were ready exactly when the project needed them.

On the flip side, I’ve also seen projects stretch simply because a grid pattern changed… then changed again. Or because shop drawings sat in an inbox for two weeks waiting for a sign-off. Steel work is precise. Once we move forward, clarity matters.

What helps most is that we manufacture locally. No overseas shipping. No ports. No waiting on containers. Because everything is made here, our production timelines are consistent and predictable—and that takes a lot of pressure off everyone involved.

If you’re building or renovating, I know what you really want: confidence. You want to know that choosing something custom and architectural won’t create chaos later. You want to feel like the team you’re working with understands the bigger picture—not just the product.

That’s where early planning makes all the difference. When steel doors are part of the conversation from the beginning, they tend to fit naturally into the schedule instead of feeling like a last-minute risk.

If you’re thinking about custom steel doors and wondering how they’ll fit into your timeline, I’m always happy to talk it through—no pressure, no sales pitch. Sometimes a quick conversation early on can save weeks later.

Warmly,
D’Hierro
